Bermuda Grass Sod
Full-sun, high-traffic turf available by order
Bermuda is the toughest common turf for wide-open, full-sun yards. It grows aggressively sideways by runners, which means it repairs itself from wear faster than any other grass we sell — the reason it covers athletic fields and hard-used back yards. It is a specialty order for us: we bring it in fresh rather than letting it sit on the yard, and pallets are typically ready in one to two business days.
Growing conditions
- Sun
- 8 or more hours of direct sun. Bermuda thins out and fails in shade — do not fight this.
- Water
- Drought-tough once established. About 1 inch per week, less than St. Augustine needs.
- Mowing
- Mow low and often, 1 to 2 inches, ideally weekly in the growing season.
- Traffic
- Excellent. Self-repairing runners make it the best choice for play and pets.
Best for
- Wide-open sunny back yards with no tree cover
- Play areas, sports use, and dog-heavy yards
- Owners who want the lowest water bill of the three grasses
- Full-sun front yards on new-construction lots
Watch out for
- It goes dormant brown earlier and greens up later than St. Augustine
- Runners invade beds and walkways. Plan on hard edging
- Anything under 6 hours of sun will thin and open up to weeds
Care after installation
Days 1 to 14
Water daily to keep the soil bed moist. Bermuda roots down fast — often knitting in under two weeks in warm weather.
Weeks 3 to 6
Taper to deep, less frequent watering. Begin mowing low once rooted; frequent low mowing is what makes Bermuda dense.
Ongoing
Feed more than St. Augustine — Bermuda is a heavy nitrogen user during peak growth. Mow weekly and edge beds to keep runners contained.
