Mulch

Black Mulch

Black mulch is the same double-shredded hardwood carried in a deep charcoal-black colorant. It makes green foliage and light-colored blooms pop, and it is the fastest way to make a tired front bed look freshly installed.

What it is used for

  • High-contrast front entry and street-view beds
  • Modern landscapes with gray stone or white masonry
  • Commercial properties that need a uniform look
  • Beds with bright annual color

Depth & coverage

Recommended depth

3 inches for new beds, 1 to 2 inches for a color refresh.

Coverage

One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep.

Installation tips

  1. 1Spread on a dry day and let it set 24 hours before rain so the colorant locks in.
  2. 2Black absorbs heat. In full-sun beds, water a little deeper the first two weeks after install.
  3. 3Keep it off light concrete during the first rain — sweep or rinse promptly if it splashes.
