Brown Mulch
Brown mulch is double-shredded hardwood with a natural brown tone that reads warm against brick and stone. The shredded fiber knits together after the first rain, so it stays on slopes better than nugget bark and breaks down slowly enough to feed the soil beneath your beds.
What it is used for
- Foundation beds and tree rings around the house
- Slopes and swales where nugget bark floats away
- Holding soil moisture through Gulf Coast summers
- Cutting weed pressure without landscape fabric

Recommended depth
3 inches for new beds, 1 to 2 inches to refresh existing mulch.

One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep.
Installation tips
- 1Pull mulch back a few inches from trunks and stems so bark can breathe.
- 2Refresh color once a year rather than piling new mulch on old — depth over 4 inches starves roots of oxygen.
- 3Edge the bed first. A clean 3-inch trench keeps mulch off the lawn during heavy rain.
