Soil

Garden Mix

Garden mix is a blended planting soil built for raised beds, vegetable rows, and flower beds. It drains faster than native Gulf Coast clay while still holding enough moisture between waterings, which is the balance most backyard gardens miss.

What it is used for

  • Filling new raised beds and cedar boxes
  • Vegetable rows and cutting gardens
  • Rebuilding flower beds that have settled
  • Topping off beds that lost soil to runoff

Depth & coverage

Recommended depth

Fill raised beds 10 to 12 inches deep; top-dress existing beds 2 to 3 inches.

Coverage

One cubic yard fills a 4x8 raised bed about 10 inches deep.

Installation tips

  1. 1Break up the clay under a new bed before filling so roots and water can move down.
  2. 2Expect 1 to 2 inches of settling in the first season. Order slightly more than the math shows.
  3. 3Mix in compost annually rather than replacing the whole bed.
